Hello, Gorgeous!
I don’t know about you, but for the most part, I’m pretty burnt out and wholly disinterested in celebrity collaborations. (Though you could probably twist my arm to have another look at Jeremy Allen White x Calvin Klein’s gratuitous celebration of tighty whities).
Then I saw the announcement of the partnership between ‘90s rock icon Alanis Morissette and Bandolier phone cases, and I took notice.
Crossbody phone cases make sense
If you’re unfamiliar with Bandolier, the West Coast e-commerce company is best known for its high-style crossbody cases for various iPhone models. While style meeting function is a recurring theme in women’s accessories, there’s another level to Bandolier - the safety factor.
Whether it’s a night out with friends or a day of running errands, there’s something inherently comforting and liberating about always having your phone on you. But it’s also important to know that you don’t have to fumble through your handbag to find your phone.
Why Alanis matters
Back in the ‘90s, it was almost impossible to turn on the radio (see what I did there?) without hearing a hit by Alanis Morissette. After a few years of frothy pop songs, Morissette released Jagged Little Pill in 1995; It’s been on all-time great lists, sold over 33 million copies, garnered 4 Grammy awards—including Album of the Year— and decades later was the basis for a short-lived jukebox musical on Broadway.
Morissette won two more Grammys for her follow-up album and singles in 1998. She was known for her angry, young, articulate woman image paired with razor-sharp lyrics. But this isn’t a rock chick appreciation post, so let's go back to the Bandolier partnership.
I’m here to remind you
Born in 1974, Morissette is part of a generation that seems to slip the mind of most marketers who hopscotch over Gen X to recognize Baby Boomers, Millennials, and Zoomers.
As a 50-year-old woman, Alanis Morissette could have been rendered invisible, as society seems intent on tucking women 40+ safely into the background. And whether this collaboration targets nostalgia-hungry Zoomers or women who grew up singing screaming Morissette’s lyrics, it matters.
The beautiful designs feature a crossbody strap printed with Morissette’s song lyrics. And while the copy exhorts wearers to “Feel the emotion of Alanis’ music with every wear,” it’s more than that. Taylor Swift broke all touring records possible, but it would seem that Alanis Morissette’s impact has shifted, but it’s just as strong.
Am I overthinking these phone cases? No doubt. But I love that a 50-year-old powerhouse woman is making a mark decades after her best-known hits are behind her. The Alanis/Bandolier crossbodies retail for about $148-$276 on Bandolierstyle.com.
Am I the only one who really wants one of these cases? Let’s discuss in the comment section.
