Hello, Gorgeous!
About two years ago a hair trend started creeping onto Instagram and TikTok. It was a bob that wasn’t quite a bob topping a shag that was more of a mullet. Back then the idea and ideal was to use color to highlight multi-tier layers. Think post-mermaid hair that was edgier, and let’s face it, extremely unflattering.
The nascent trend was called Hime hair (Hime is Japanese for princess) inspired by a style worn by Japanese nobility during the Heian era in Japan from about 794-1192 CE.
In those ancient times hair was worn as long as possible to create sheets of silky black hair. Then again, during the Heian period, faces were powdered excessively, teeth were blackened, and eyebrows shaved before being drawn up much higher on the face, so maybe not the best beauty era to emulate. But back to Jellyfish hair.
Jellyfish hair
At the Grammys a few weeks ago, Miley Cyrus showed up with hair that trimmed into blunt edges including bangs, a partial bob and then longer layers.
Lady Gaga rocked a similar look only her hair included pieces that hugged her cheekbones. Let’s not discuss her Mr. Spock-like bangs and bleached eyebrows. Billie Eilish then completed the trio of unflattering looks making this a trend and not an anomaly abomination.
The look was dubbed Jellyfish hair for the way shorter layers hugged the face followed by random tendrils and pieces.
Making matters worse, Jellyfish fashion has also been turning up. Overly poofed skirts with random nets and tassles showed up on red carpets including on Ariana Grande and a few other famous folks in need of new stylists, because sometimes even Dior messes up.
I’m only saddened that the late great Joan Rivers isn’t here to offer her insights to this unfortunate look.
Celebrity trends don’t always translate well
Let’s face it, celebrities face a number of factors that inspire them to choose certain looks. Sometimes it’s as simple as reclaiming fan attention or wanting (or needing) to be including in fashion roundups following glittery events.
The thing is though, Jellyfish hair is a trend that flatters no face. And I’m willing to bet that the looks mentioned above were created with wigs or clip-in hair.
Unless you’re under the age of 20 or live in a pineapple under the sea, you should skip this trend. And one of the extreme joys of being over 40 is that you’re old enough to fully revel in your decision to reject unfortunate trends.
