Toppers 101: Part Three of Three
Judy Geisinsky, Founder of Milano Collection Wigs, Certified Trichologist & Wig/Topper Expert Talks Toppers
Hello Gorgeous!
In case you missed it, I’ve been running a series on hair toppers - a hybrid between hair extensions and wigs.
August is Hair Loss Awareness Month, a time dedicated to understanding, supporting, and addressing the challenges of hair loss. I figured this was a great time to tackle what for many women over the age of 40 is a common and tough to talk about issue.
Hair loss in women is a trending topic
According to consumer trend tracker Spate, hair loss has racked up an average of 4.5K monthly searches and a +67.4% growth in searches compared to last year. Consumers — most especially women — are looking for solutions to thinning hair and hair loss.
Having worked in the beauty & wellness industry in multiple categories for over two decades, I get asked endless questions about beauty and trends on all kinds of topics. Toppers have become almost a dirty secret for many women, they want to know more but don’t know where to start. I wanted to cover this topic in an open, nonjudgemental, and accessible way.
The popularity of hair toppers
Hair toppers are more popular than ever to cover up female hair loss and to make the most of the hair you have. Unlike a wig that covers everything, or hair extensions that adhere to your hair, hair toppers are clip-in pieces that can be made of synthetic fibers or human hair - expect to pay a lot more for the latter.
When I had a major family wedding a few years back, I wanted people to notice me, and not my thin hair. I went to Milano Wigs, one of the premiere destinations for wigs. I didn’t want full coverage, I just wanted to look like myself again - which is why I opted for a topper.
Since that time, I’ve bought about four more, with my most recent purchase being earlier this summer, and costing a whopping $1,450.00. Bear in mind that was a top quality fully human hair (known as Remy) topper which was beautifully highlighted and then cut not once but two times to frame my face. It looks absolutely incredible, though I reserve it for special occasions or photo ops.
I’ll be honest, while I talk about pretty much any beauty related topic publicly for a living, I’m not one to discuss my private grooming habits, or the fact that I lost most of my hair some years back after intense medical treatments. My hair has grown back, but is baby thin (and a completely different color!). I’m talking about this now since so many women have come to me for solutions. Toppers work for me, so I thought I’d share my knowledge as well as insights from experts.
Judy Geisinsky, Founder of Milano Collection Wigs, Certified Trichologist & Wig/Topper Expert Talks Toppers
I’m really excited that the grand dame of toppers and beautifully crafted wigs, Judy Geisinsky agreed to share her deep knowledge with the rest of us. This interview has been edited gently for clarity and brevity, but there was so much great information that I mostly left Geisinsky’s quotes as is.
Merging business acumen + style sense
Geisinsky is an Orthodox Jewish woman, and her path to founding this brand began over 20 years ago when she got married and started covering her hair with wigs as many Orthodox women do (covering their hair after marriage is a tradition for many observant Jewish women).
Geisinsky said:
Being quite sensory by nature, I sought a natural, comfortable option in a market where wigs often lacked both qualities. At that time, wearing wigs wasn’t very mainstream, and many weren't comfortable or natural looking - I could always tell when someone was wearing one.
Drawing from my background in business management and accounting, I launched Milano Collection Wig Company initially through pop-ups and eventually establishing a showroom in New York, catering to our largest customer base. (Since then, we have launched showrooms in Los Angeles and Long Beach, California and Hollywood, Florida as well). My knack for problem-solving, and my first-hand experience as a wig wearer drove me to innovate, resulting in patented designs that began as solutions to my own challenges.
For instance, when traditional methods of securing wigs to the head caused a bald spot at my hairline, I developed the Original WiGrip Comfort Band™, eliminating the need for clips or adhesives while keeping the wig securely and comfortably on. When I saw the need for a transparent element in the WiGrip band at the front hairline and partline, for women wearing lace or mono top wigs, I developed the Lace WiGrip, an innovation that is now patented. When hairlines looked artificial, I created a Hairline band for a natural look. These innovations positioned Milano as a leader in the wig industry, focused on comfort and natural aesthetics.
Expanding to the hair loss market
Geisinsky said:
Our expansion into the hair loss segment was a natural progression, driven by a growing market need. Taking a fresh approach, I immersed myself in studying Trichology and became a certified clinical trichologist, enabling me to provide holistic insights and solutions. While I always encourage exploring medical and holistic options, I firmly believe in the transformative power of a well-made hairpiece for restoring confidence.
I'm deeply passionate about empowering women through beautiful, undetectable hairpieces that enhance their self-esteem. What began as a personal journey has blossomed into a mission to support women facing hair loss, and that passion continues to drive me every day.
So, what exactly are toppers anyway?
Geisinsky said:
Toppers, also known as wiglets, are partial coverage hairpieces designed to provide volume and fullness specifically to the top area of the head. They are named "toppers" because they cover the top part of the head. These pieces come in various shapes and sizes and are ideal for women experiencing hair loss primarily on the top of their head.
Unlike wigs that cover the entire scalp, toppers are intended to seamlessly blend with your natural hair, offering a very natural and comfortable appearance. They are particularly popular among women dealing with androgenetic alopecia, a common type of hair loss caused by aging. Many women experience thinning due to aging but do not require the full coverage of a wig. In such cases, a topper is often the perfect solution to add volume and disguise thinning areas, providing a more lightweight and comfortable alternative to full wigs.
Wig or topper? Geisinsky said the size of the topper depends on the extent of hair loss. “When hair loss is more extensive or complete, a full wig, which covers the entire head, is typically recommended. Wigs also offer the flexibility of adding length or trying different hair colors.”
Both wigs and toppers are popular - choosing between a topper and a wig depends on individual circumstances and preferences. Geisinsky said “It's essential to visit an experienced wig or hair loss center for evaluation to determine the best solution for each person's unique challenges and lifestyle. Attention to these details and thorough research can significantly enhance comfort and satisfaction with the chosen hairpiece.”
Why are toppers so expensive?
I mentioned my own splurge above.
Geisinsky explained why toppers can cost as much as they do and the incredible amount of skill it takes to create a hairpiece that looks just like your hair.
“Toppers and wigs vary widely in price and quality, which can seem daunting when starting your hair journey,” Geisinsky said. She broke down the factors that contribute to the price of a topper or wig, primarily revolving around the quality of the hair used
1. Hair Quality: The type of hair used significantly impacts both the cost and the natural appearance of the piece:
Synthetic Hair: This is the most affordable option but tends to lack the natural look and feel of real hair. Synthetic hairpieces also have limited alternative styling options and may not withstand heat styling. They typically do not last as long as human hair options.
Human Hair (Non-Remy): Human hair that has been collected and processed without preserving the hair's natural cuticle alignment. While it's real human hair, it may not be as natural-looking or durable as higher-quality options.
Remy Hair: This refers to human hair where the cuticle remains intact and aligned. It results in smoother, more natural-looking hairpieces that are less prone to tangling. Milano Collection wigs and toppers are all made from high quality,Remy Hair.
Virgin Hair: Considered the highest quality, virgin hair is unprocessed and free from chemical treatments. It retains its natural texture and color, offering unparalleled softness and longevity. Virgin European hair is highly sought after for its fine texture and natural appearance. Virgin hairpieces can last significantly longer—some of mine are approaching eight years—making them a durable investment especially if cared for properly. Milano offers 3 styles made from virgin hair: Divine Luxe which comes in wigs and toppers, Luxe, and Secret Collections.
2. Length and Color: The length and color of the hair also impact the cost. Longer hair and lighter colors are generally more expensive due to higher demand and rarity in the marketplace.
3. Craftsmanship and Brand Reputation: Beyond the hair itself, the craftsmanship of the wig or topper and the reputation of the brand also influence pricing. Reputable wig makers invest in skilled labor and quality control to ensure each piece meets high standards of durability and natural appearance.
4. Personalizations and Fit: Personalized pieces designed to match individual preferences and specifications will also command a higher price due to the tailored craftsmanship involved.
When investing in a topper or wig, it's crucial to consult with a reputable provider who can guide you in selecting the right type of hair for your needs. Ensuring the quality and authenticity of the hair will not only enhance the natural look and feel but also contribute to the longevity and overall satisfaction with your hairpiece.
How do you care for a topper? What are topper grips?
Toppers are designed to be easier to care for compared to full wigs or natural hair.
Here’s a quick guide from Geisinsky to caring for a topper:
Styling and Maintenance:
Toppers cover the top part of your head, with your natural hair underneath. If the topper comes styled, it requires less styling of your own hair since your hair becomes the underneath portion. Additionally, if you have grey roots, a topper can help space out your root touch-ups by covering them.
It’s advisable not to sleep or shower with your topper on to preserve its style. Avoiding these activities reduces the need for frequent restyling and keeps your topper looking great for longer periods.
Washing:
Depending on the quality of the hair, toppers can go for longer periods without needing to be washed, unlike natural hair which typically requires restyling after each wash. This saves time and effort in your daily routine.
Topper Grips:
Topper grips, otherwise known as Top Grips, are like adjustable headbands with a grip material that secures the topper to your head without the need for clips, combs, or adhesives. Milano’s patented TopGrip™ is clipped into your topper to hold it securely. It has a translucent strap in the back to avoid bulk by the nape and is undetectable. This innovative method enhances comfort and ensures a natural look without compromising security. It’s great for wigs too, but essential for toppers.
Styling Human Hair Toppers:
If your topper is made from human hair, you can style it similarly to your own hair. However, because human hair toppers are not washed as frequently, styling is needed less often. It’s important not to sleep in your topper to allow your hair and scalp to breathe overnight.
When styling, use minimal styling products to avoid buildup in the hair, which would require more frequent washing. Opt for light or diluted styling products to maintain the freshness and natural appearance of your topper. We introduced a line of lightweight, residue-free hair care products this year called Milano Essentials - specifically designed for the care and styling of human hair wigs and toppers.
In conclusion, caring for a topper involves minimal maintenance compared to traditional hair care routines. Proper care, including avoiding sleeping and showering with the topper on, using TopGrips for secure attachment, and washing and styling with products and tools designed for human hair toppers, will ensure that your topper remains in excellent condition and maintains its natural appearance for an extended period.
Are women more comfortable wearing hair enhancements?
Geisinsky said “Today, the perception of hair enhancements has undergone a significant shift. Styles that were once associated with obvious wigs or wiggy looks from the past are being replaced by trendy options that are virtually undetectable. This evolution is thanks to advancements in wig-making technology and a broader acceptance of wearing hairpieces.”
So, are more celebrities wearing hair?
Geisinsky said “Celebrities and media influencers have played a pivotal role in popularizing these modern styles. Characters like Moira Rose from Schitt's Creek and icons such as Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, The Kardashians, and Katy Perry (just to name a few) have showcased how wigs and toppers can be fashionable accessories rather than mere cover-ups.”
Most importantly, “The stigma that once surrounded wearing hair enhancements has largely faded, and these pieces are now seen as stylish accessories akin to makeup or jewelry. Choosing the right wig can instantly transform your look, enhancing your natural beauty with ease. It can even reduce the need for makeup by adding color and a radiant glow to your appearance.”
Toppers look better and more natural than ever
“Modern wigs and toppers are designed to mimic natural hair growth patterns, textures, and colors, achieving a realistic appearance that seamlessly blends with one's natural hair,” Geisinsky said. “Whether it's a sleek bob, luscious curls, or a stylish pixie cut, the focus is on enhancing natural beauty and versatility.”
She also said that this transformation reflects a broader cultural shift towards embracing authenticity and individual expression.
“Outdated perceptions of obvious hair enhancements have given way to a new era of stylish, virtually undetectable options. These advancements empower women to express themselves authentically while enjoying the transformative power of quality hairpieces.”
One more thing
Whether you are considering a topper or wig for managing hair loss, honoring religious beliefs, or simply exploring new fashion trends, Geisinsky said that taking the time to explore the diverse offerings in the marketplace can truly enhance your natural beauty and elevate your confidence. “The right hairpiece should feel like an extension of yourself, seamlessly integrating into your style and enhancing your overall look.”
Understanding the nuances and quality of different hairpieces is crucial in achieving a seamless, undetectable, and natural appearance.
“It's important to remember that just because it's purchased doesn't mean it's any less your own hair. Embrace the compliments that come your way and savor the experience of feeling your best.”
And Geisinsky is on a mission to help women feel better about the way they look. “What started as a personal quest for me has blossomed into a journey of helping women worldwide look and feel their best. Each woman's story and journey with hairpieces is unique, and I am honored to be a part of that transformation.”
